Anywhere in England can be found the remnants of "Feudal Land Owners ". Most of the towns started as "Feudal Villages". The Manor house usually entered through a gatehouse with nearby a large stables and outbuildings all of which required a large number of workers to look after the manor and farm the land to support the Lord and family. To house these people there was built workers (Surfs) cottages and houses in a village usually round a church, a pub and may have a sports ground for the lords cricket team. Look outside your town at the local villages and you will find a similar group of buildings where generations of the same family have lived and worked.

"BEYOND THE BLACK STUMP". The Aussy answer to "How far is it?"
When clearing the Australian plains for farming , it was usual th "Ring Bark" the gum trees to stop them taking water and nutrients out of the soil. This would result in a lot of standing dead trees. When firewood was required, thess trunks were felled and the stumps set fire to but they did not always burn and some fire blackened stumps were left . Also where the forest stopped and desert took over towards the centre of the country, it really was "Beyond The Black Stump."
